used_goods.inddJust when you hoped they were safely ensconced in their sepulchers, up from the grave they arose! The Used Goods are back again, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, like it or lump it but ignore at your peril! After a 20 year navel-gazing sabbatical, legendary Jackson pop-punk/garage rockers The Used Goods will sally forth to do battle against excess chordage Friday, Nov. 6 at One to One Studio, 121 Millsaps Ave. Best known for 1982 Big Monkey singles “Drive-in” b/w “Runaround” and incendiary live performances at Skid Marks, W.C. Don’s, Hal & Mal’s, Geno’s Blues Alley and other area rock dives, the Goods were a seminal part of the ’80s Jackson rock scene, along with such acts as The Windbreakers, Radio London, The Flyrods, etc. Founding members Handsome Joe Bennett (vocals, guitar) and Rockin’ Robert Crook (guitar, vocals), with help from long-time associates and musical compadres Jimbo Jah” Richardson (drums, vocals) and Paul “Tuck” Tucker (bass, vocals) will bring back memories of that halcyon decade and kindle a few new ones as well. Security provided and beer and chicken will be available for rent. Show starts at 8:00pm with special guests Signals. Glory!!”

The Jackson Arts Collective and One to One Studios Present:
Mobiles

Saturday, September 26th, One to One Studios will host an evening full of stimuli for the senses. Experience a unique evening of photography, music and dance beginning at 7:30 with the opening of the photography gallery and continuing at 9pm with the music and dance presentation.

5 musicians, 6 dancers, and 8 visual artists have partnered together to celebrate Jackson’s ever changing and evolving art scene.  Front Porch Dance will present new choreography set to live music by musician/composer Jamie Weems.  Photographers Roy Adkins, Ron Blaylock, William Patrick Butler, Mary Fitzgerald, Josh Hailey, Kenya Hudson, Aaron Phillips, and Lizzie Wright will unveil new work in the front gallery.

The event was inspired by the brilliant mobiles created by celebrated American artist Alexander Calder.  Mobiles are kinetic visual medium that exist in space and time.  They constantly move and evolve – never giving the beholder the same image twice.  The music and dance partnership of Jamie Weems and Front Porch is based on composed forms.  However, within these forms, there are improvised elements that constantly give new shape to expression.

The photography displayed in the front gallery will be centered on the subject of local music and dance performance.  Each one of the 8 artists has a gift for capturing the essence of live performance.  Their collective body of work will showcase the unique and evolving range of music and dance in Jackson.

The chameleon-like qualities of One to One Studios make it a ‘mobile’ of sorts.  This performance promises to turn the venue into a yet to be seen version of itself.   A reception in the gallery will open at 7:30 PM with the music and dance performance starting promptly at 9:00 PM.  Don’t miss out on this unique collaborative gathering of artists.  One to One Studios is located at 121 Millsaps Ave., Jackson, MS.

The Jackson Arts Collective is made up of visual artists, musicians, writers, poets, and everyone in between.  Their goal is to increase exposure of artists through hosting events highlighting Jackson’s artistic diversity.  We facilitate events that emerge from our arts community.  Our hope is that the community can continue to direct itself in an increasingly more efficient manner with the aid of these resources.

The Jackson Arts Collective and One to One Studios Present:

Fais do-do!

Saturday, March 14th, One to One Studios will host a vibrant display of fiddle-driven dance music. From 8:30 PM until the dancers drop, three Jackson string bands and one Cajun band from Lafayette, Louisiana will crank out high-energy music that will entice people to fill the fabulous dance floor at One to One Studios.

Fais do-do is a Cajun French term for public dance party. With the help of some friends from Louisiana, One to One Studios will be transformed into a pulsing fais do-do all night! The Vrai Boys feature two young, phenomenal Cajun musicians backed by a strong rhythm section. Matthew Doucet is the son of Louisiana music giant Michael Doucet from the band Beau Soleil. Following in the footsteps of his father, Matthew is making a name for himself in the Louisiana music community with his vivacious fiddle style. Accordion ace Horace Trahan shares the front of the stage with Doucet and infuses tasteful melody with a strong rhythmic drive.

Tommy Bryan Leford, co-creator of Thacker Mountain Radio, will present his newest Jackson based band, The Dixie Nationals. The Scramblers will add their variety of local-flavored dance tunes powered by the sultry and wild fiddling of Jack Magee, who was recently added to the Mississippi Folk Art Directory. The Hot Tamales will round out the fun with their blend of rich harmonies and eclectic instrumentation. The Tamales are a six-piece, all girl band that brings together some of the most talented female musicians in Mississippi.

In conjunction with the event, One to One Studio will host a free dance lesson Thursday, March 5th from 8 to 10 PM. Catherine Bishop will teach the Cajun two-step, waltz, and the Virginia reel.

The Jackson Arts Collective is made up of visual artists, musicians, writers, poets, and everyone in between. Its goal is to work in the Jackson metropolitan area in conjunction with the city and local organizations to promote local artists. The Collective is always seeking to increase exposure of artists through hosting events highlighting Jackson’s artistic diversity.

When it comes to liveliness and material these four bands are inexhaustible. The show starts at 8:30 and there will be music ringing through the night as long as there are dancers on the floor. Admission is $7 (or $10 for two). Bring a dance partner! Grab your boots and your dancing legs. Don’t miss out on the Fais do-do!!!
